Committee unanimously backs bill requiring education and revenue reports to school boards

The Education Funding Committee voted unanimously, 18–0, to recommend passage (OTP) of HB1514, a bill directing the Department of Education and the Department of Revenue Administration to provide school compliance and financial reports to school and school-board authorities.
Representative Damon, the prime sponsor, and Representative Spilsbury, who moved OTP, said the measure is designed to help volunteer school board members be better informed and to improve transparency in the wake of prior controversies highlighted during committee discussion. “This concern about how reporting information from the Department of Education reaches decision makers, including most notably school board officials, is one that has been illustrated in the Claremont situation,” Spilsbury said.
Committee members did not register objections during debate and placed the bill on consent; Representative Spilsbury will write the committee report.
The committee proceeded to other items on the docket after the unanimous vote.
