Committee rescinds and replaces amendment to HB7 to address students with disabilities

The chair moved and the committee rescinded the prior amendment to allow a more thoroughly drafted substitute.
Senator Woods said he had spoken with education stakeholders and student advocates over the weekend and would offer improved language that he believed would address concerns. After the substitute language was circulated and discussed, the committee adopted the revised amendment and gave the bill a favorable report as amended.
Members thanked Senator Woods for outreach and work to reach consensus; one senator emphasized the need to maintain federal protections already in place for students with disabilities and to codify appropriate procedures without undermining existing rights.
