The Arlington City Council approved a contract change order that expands sewer work associated with the Hundred And 88th and Smoky Point Boulevard roundabout project, increasing the project cost by $1,045,696.05.
Public works staff described the change order as an upsizing of an existing 8‑inch sewer to an 18‑inch main and an extension of roughly 1,090 feet to reach Lift Station 6. Staff said the extension became necessary after observing current flows and projected near‑term growth that would overcapacity the existing 8‑inch line within two to three years.
Staff also described a utility conflict: a gas line was located too close to the planned sewer alignment, requiring relocation of the sewer into the roadway, deeper excavation through 12 inches of concrete plus 8 inches of asphalt, and installation of sheet piles where the sewer transitions to the Lift Station 6 wet well. Staff said a specific connection segment near the lift station will cost more than $200,000 because the existing sewer main is about 17 feet deep.
Funding: staff told the council the additional cost will be paid from the Sewer Capital Improvement (CIP) Fund, not the sewer operating or general fund, and that the Sewer CIP is budgeted for five years and has sufficient funds to accommodate the change order.
Council action: a councilmember moved to approve the contract change order and to authorize the mayor to sign; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote ('Aye'). The formal change order (number 2) was adopted at the meeting.
