Mayor Woodfin honors Superintendent Sullivan; announces $2 million SEEDS grant for Western Corridor

Mayor Randall L. Woodfin used his communications time to recognize Birmingham City Schools Superintendent Dr. Mark Sullivan for being named Superintendent of the Year by the Alabama Education Association and to announce a $2,000,000 SEEDS (Site Evaluation and Economic Development Strategy) grant targeted to the Western Corridor.
Reading a proclamation, the mayor noted district-level improvements: "3 years ago, the school system had a 71 and today's a 77," he said, and praised the reduction in schools earning an F from 15 to one. Dr. Sullivan said the award reflects collective work by teachers, custodians, bus drivers, principals and community partners and invited members of his staff and the school board to accept recognition.
On economic development, Woodfin described the SEEDS grant as a targeted investment to leverage the Western Corridor's transportation infrastructure, rail, highway and inland port to prepare brownfield sites, make land shovel-ready and attract freight, logistics and manufacturing jobs. He said complimentary parking will be provided for the State of the Community town hall scheduled Feb. 24 at the Boutwell Auditorium.
Councilors offered congratulations and emphasized continued support for the school district’s academic trajectory. The presentation was ceremonial; no legislative action was taken during that segment.
