White County honors fair leaders, recognizes local honoree; updates on convenience center and park signage

The White County Commission used part of its February meeting to recognize community achievements and update the public on local projects.

A proclamation honored the White County Fair/Fire Board for being named champion of champions by the state association; county executives invited the fair board forward for a photo and announced a celebration in early March. The commission also presented a proclamation recognizing Hannah Haley for her accomplishments and community advocacy; meeting text contains inconsistent spellings of the honoree and the association name, but the intent was to commend local achievement and youth leadership.

On infrastructure, county staff and commissioners said construction of a new convenience center adjacent to the landfill is progressing and that a temporary site will be used for household garbage until the permanent center opens. Initial road and entrance work for the temporary site was estimated at about $25,000 to $30,000; the county noted that some entrance design issues involve TDOT and that a long‑term lease with Waste Management covers use of the permanent site.

Commissioners also discussed a proposed new sign for a county park, with cost estimates again cited in the $25,000–$30,000 range. A subcommittee of two commissioners plans to meet and return to the steering committee before the March meeting with sign options and a recommendation.

The meeting record shows responses to public questions were handled during these updates and that county staff will follow up on entrance routing, lease conditions, and sign proposals.
