Resident urges Saint Charles to seek ICE notification, request police accompaniment

A resident urged the Saint Charles City Council on Feb. 17 to ask the Department of Homeland Security to notify the city when Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have a judicial warrant for an arrest and to have local police accompany ICE in such cases.
Kathy Brenz told the council she respects the city’s police department but said ICE sometimes acts broadly and that notifying the city could reduce risks to the accused and the community. “I am asking that the St. Charles government look again at the last section of the First Amendment and petition the government, in this case, the Department of Homeland Security, for a redress of grievances, asking that ICE notify the city of Saint Charles if they have a judicial warrant to arrest an individual for a specific crime,” Brenz said.
Brenz also urged local officers to accompany ICE agents “to minimize a danger to everyone in our community,” and said she believes local officers would model de-escalation and crowd-control practices. She characterized her request as nonpartisan: “Please consider this suggestion, divorce from politics, but in support of human decency.”
The council did not act on the request during the meeting; staff and council members thanked Brenz for her comments and moved on to other agenda items. No formal proposal, ordinance or staff directive was recorded in response during the session.
