Summary
Halifax Health presented planned service and capacity expansions at the Medical Center of Deltona, including a larger emergency department, dozens of additional inpatient beds, new specialties and an AHCA certification expected in March with operations starting in April.
Halifax Health told the Deltona City Commission on Feb. 17 that it is expanding services and capacity at the Medical Center of Deltona, with immediate plans to enlarge the emergency department, add inpatient beds and recruit new specialties.
"Our mission at Halifax is to be the community health care leader," Ben Eby, vice president administrator for Halifax Health, told the commission. He said Halifax has provided care in Volusia County for nearly a century and is now bringing additional specialty services to Deltona.
Eby outlined specific additions planned for 2026: 19 new emergency-department rooms that will bring the Deltona ER to 30 beds, 47 additional inpatient beds raising hospital capacity to about 90, and future plans to add three more stories to the tower to reach roughly 180 beds if demand requires it. He listed new specialties the hospital is recruiting, including neurosurgery, urology, interventional cardiology and pediatric primary care. Eby said the expanded emergency department requires Agency for Health Care Administration certification and that the hospital expects certification in March and operations by April.
Commissioners praised the expansion. Vice Mayor Avila Vasquez thanked Halifax for expanding ER capacity and for community engagement, and Commissioner Nobick urged continued emphasis on pediatric services in the emergency department. Commissioner Novick and the mayor also expressed support and noted the facility's community role.
Halifax also described recent additions already in place, including a neuroscience center of excellence, a Cancer Center for Hope and designation as a primary stroke center with American Heart Association recognition. Eby said Halifax has seen more than 155,000 emergency-room visits and more than 12,000 admissions at the Deltona facility since opening and that the system is adding services "every year" to meet need.
The presentation closed with Halifax's emphasis on community partnerships and awards from local polling that recognized the Medical Center of Deltona and several physicians.
The commission did not take any formal action on the presentation; commissioners said they stand ready to support the hospital's expansion efforts and asked staff and Halifax to continue coordinating on workforce, pediatric programming and permitting for construction.
