Senate clears bill to rename bridge honoring Staff Sgt. Christopher Potts; companion also passes

Lawmakers on Thursday approved legislation to rename a bridge on Aquinnock Island in honor of Staff Sergeant Christopher Potts and passed a companion measure.
Sen. Filag, sponsor of S 591, said the Red Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority requested that the bridge be included in the naming. "Now it'll be known as the staff sergeant Christopher Potts' [bridge]," the sponsor said as he moved passage. The Senate recorded a 32-0 vote in favor and the act passed.
Sen. Filag also moved H 5051, described on the floor as the companion bill. That measure likewise passed 32-0. After the vote, the sponsor introduced family members and veterans present in the gallery, including Terry Potts (identified as the gold star wife), Command Sergeant Major Raymond Veenes and David Jarrett, and asked that the measure be forwarded to the governor to arrange signage.
Sen. Sosnowski separately introduced the commander of the Wakefield VFW, Tiger Patrick, who was welcomed to the chamber.
