The Rhode Island Senate on Thursday passed S 720, a bill that gives the City of Providence authority to reset a veterans property tax exemption that lawmakers said has not been changed in over two decades.
Sen. Lita Chacon moved passage of the measure, saying the bill “allows the city council, with the approval of the mayor, to... reset the veterans tax exemption that hasn't been changed in over 20 years.” With no floor discussion, the clerk recorded 31 votes in favor and none opposed; the presiding officer announced the act passed.
The bill was reported to the chamber by the Committee on Housing and Municipal Government. No amendments or implementation details were discussed on the floor. A later request was recorded to show one senator as voting in the affirmative on the item; the request did not change the outcome.
The measure will be transmitted as adopted according to the chamber's routine transmittal procedures; the Senate also ordered adopted matters sent to the House and the governor.
