Centennial and MBIT students earn SkillsUSA honors; $35,000 robotics donation announced

The board took time during its Feb. 10 meeting to recognize students who competed at the MBIT SkillsUSA district competition. Staff said MBIT earned 9 first-place, 29 second-place and 13 third-place medals; several students were called forward to receive certificates and photos.
"The first place finishers will head to the state competition in Hershey later this year with hopes of going to nationals this summer," the superintendent-level presenter said. Named students included Patrick Farrow (first place, plumbing), Casey Winter (first place, cake decorating) and other medalists listed by staff.
Board members also highlighted a recent robotics open house at William Tennant. Board members thanked staff and students and noted that state Representative Brian Monroe secured $35,000 for the robotics program. "Thank you again to representative Monroe for securing $35,000 for the robotics program," one board member said.
MBIT demand was also discussed later in the meeting: staff reported roughly 680 applications for about 330 seats for next year, with cosmetology and electrical among the most-applied programs; board members noted land and funding constraints to expansion and said they are exploring options.
