Senate confirms Dr. Jerome M. Larkin as Rhode Island Department of Health director, 33–2

The Rhode Island Senate confirmed Dr. Jerome M. Larkin as director of the Department of Health on Tuesday by a recorded vote of 33–2.

Senator Miller, who introduced the nominee, described Larkin as an ‘‘experienced practitioner, administrator, teacher and leader’’ with more than three decades in medicine. Miller noted Larkin’s roles as medical director for inpatient infectious disease consultation services at Rhode Island Hospital and as an associate professor of clinical medicine at Brown University’s medical school.

Supporters highlighted Larkin’s public-health credentials and local community service, including chairing the Tiverton School Committee during the COVID-19 pandemic. ‘‘We are fortunate to have a nominee with Dr. Larkin’s caliber for this crucial post,’’ Miller said on the floor.

Senators DePalmer, Dela Cruz and others seconded and voiced endorsement, while some senators noted policy concerns they said they had discussed privately with Larkin (Senator Dela Cruz requested that Larkin respect both public health and individual constitutional rights related to policy choices). Following floor statements, the clerk recorded 33 votes in favor and 2 opposed; the appointment was adopted.
