Board reviews finance items including $5,720 golf‑cart purchase and raises concerns about repeated middle‑school trip

During the Feb. 9 work session, finance staff briefed the board on upcoming agenda items and purchases: a proposed used golf‑cart purchase for $5,720 to replace a unit that requires significant repairs; planned purchase of fitness equipment for the high‑school weight room using Ready to Learn grant funds; several elementary and middle school field trips listed with costs in the agenda; and a $3,000 donation to Charlestown Elementary to buy recess equipment, educational games, technology and safety equipment.

A board member raised a substantive concern about the middle‑school field trip plan, noting the seventh‑grade cohort would visit Paradise Farms for a third time and describing previous reviews as "not great" for earlier visits. The member said repeated visits to the same site can be "underwhelming" for students. The superintendent responded that staff sought to retain elements of the earlier Henlopen experience that aided student bonding (shared meal and campfire), prioritized accessibility and proximity for an evening program, and agreed to gather feedback after the trip.

Staff also listed a request to establish a Great Valley High School activity club called Club America and noted educational service contracts on the agenda. The finance committee will meet Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. to review items before the business meeting.
