Commissioners hire contractor for phased demolition of older Gibson County jails, council hears update

George Ballard briefed the Gibson County Council on plans the commissioners have put in motion to demolish two older jail facilities. Ballard said the county entered an agreement with Garmon Construction—the firm involved in building the new sheriff’s office and jail—to help manage demolition of structures referenced in the meeting as the '89' and '48' jail.
Ballard told the council the demolition cannot be accomplished with a single wrecking‑ball approach; the project requires planning and coordination and the county is preparing requests for proposals (RFPs) with input from county attorney Jason Spindler and other consultants. He said he has urged the commissioners and contractors to expedite the work and expects additional steps in coming weeks.
No formal contract award or appropriation for demolition costs was acted on at the council meeting; Ballard’s update was informational and councilmembers had an opportunity to ask clarifying questions.
