The Magna City Council voted on Jan. 26 to add $219,000 to the administration budget to fund three staff positions the city manager described as an assistant city manager, an assistant for the mayor and a customer-service/front-desk position.
City Manager David Brickey presented salary-and-benefits estimates for the three positions and said prior budget allocations of $154,000 left an additional difference of approximately $219,000 for full-year costs. Brickey said the hires would create consistent staffing at the Webster Center and support the mayor’s increasingly public-facing role.
Council members discussed the need to both contain costs and ensure a visible local staff presence. One council member expressed concern about the additional spending; the mayor and other members said they supported hiring to improve responsiveness. A motion to add the $219,000 carried on a recorded voice vote with four in favor and one opposed; the meeting transcript records one dissent but does not attach a public roll-call name to that no vote in the audio record.
Council directed staff to post required public-hearing notices and return a public hearing on Feb. 10 with formal job descriptions and final salary details. Some members asked for probationary evaluation periods for at-will hires to confirm fit and performance in the new roles.
