Traffic & Transportation committee members reported this month’s focus on redesigning West 3rd Street and on systemwide micromobility maintenance problems. The committee said snow forced a virtual walk‑through and that many participants agreed the existing treatment is ineffective at preventing speeding; the group plans additional outreach and another site visit.
Janine, the committee chair, said the city told the committee it cannot make certain changes until the street is repaved, pushing back the timeline for immediate fixes. The committee said some short‑term design alternatives and neighborhood engagement will continue and that neighbors have already submitted a petition with roughly 600 signatures asking for redesign.
Members also raised concerns about Citi Bike and Lyft maintenance and contract compliance. Chair Valerie Dela Rosa said she would share a one‑page summary and a dataset from the state comptroller showing "the $21,000,000 that New York City DOT is leaving on the table from Citi Bike and Lyft that they're owed," and the committee will consider whether to pursue a resolution related to Citi Bike/Lyft maintenance obligations.
The committee confirmed scheduling: the 7th Avenue South redesign will be discussed in March; Canal Street redesign will be on the April agenda. Committee leaders said they will invite neighbors and local business‑improvement partners to upcoming meetings to build support for a more robust corridor approach rather than piecemeal fixes.
Members asked DOT and other agencies to explain sequencing and repaving plans so design work can move forward. The committee also plans to revisit Citi Bike/Lyft discussions during the Sammy’s Law agenda item next month.
