Summary
After a brief public hearing, the Geneva City Council approved a balanced fiscal year 2027 budget by a 9-0 roll-call vote with one member absent. Councilors cited strategic-plan goals and staff said public review and published notices preceded the vote.
The Geneva City Council on Feb. 17 adopted the city’s fiscal year 2027 budget following a brief public hearing and staff presentation.
City Administrator Alex Boyce told the council the preliminary budget had been available online for public review, council questions had been published and addressed, and the document was crafted to reflect goals set at a November strategic-plan workshop, including dependable infrastructure and facilities that meet community needs. Finance Director Jennifer Milewski and staff presented the budget as balanced.
Mayor Burns moved to adopt Resolution 2026-18 and Aldersperson Paschke seconded. The council approved the budget by roll-call vote, 9 in favor, 0 opposed, 1 absent. City staff noted the public hearing and notice had been published in the Suburban Chronicle and that no additional public questions remained at the time of the vote.
Why it matters: The adopted budget sets the city’s spending and policy priorities for the coming fiscal year and funds capital and operational goals discussed in recent council strategic planning sessions. Councilors emphasized continued investment in infrastructure, purposeful growth and engagement with residents.
What’s next: Staff will implement the line-item and capital plans in the adopted budget and return to the council as needed for contract approvals, grant matches or budget amendments. The council’s administrative materials say the budget process included an introduction on Feb. 2 and a Committee of the Whole session Feb. 9 for additional questions.
Votes and procedural notes: The adoption followed a formal motion and a recorded roll-call vote. Earlier in the meeting the council opened and then closed a public hearing on the proposed budget before taking the adoption vote.
