Commission authorizes planning for transition of Fargo Youth Initiative to community governance

FARGO — The Fargo City Commission authorized staff to prepare memoranda of understanding and related documents to transition the Fargo Youth Initiative (FYI) from city administration to a broader community‑based governance model in partnership with the Fargo School District, the Boys & Girls Club and Fargo Parks District.
Nicole (staff) described FYI’s history — the commission supported creating the youth advisory group in 2012 and adopted a resolution in 2013 — and said staff and partners recommended moving administration to the school district while retaining a liaison commissioner role. “We would still propose having a liaison commissioner... but that takes the planning department out of being the administrators,” she said.
Isabella Meyer, FYI chair, told the commission the group helps amplify youth voices on issues including homelessness and public health and celebrated events such as the Impact Fargo forum and summits on suicide prevention and tobacco. Commissioner Kolpak moved to authorize staff to prepare necessary MOUs and documents; the motion passed by roll call.
City staff said they will work with the city attorney on transition paperwork and return to the commission with formal agreements.
