FARGO — The Fargo City Commission approved a reorganization of the auditor’s office that transfers finance‑related duties to the finance division, moves records requests into the auditor’s office and appoints Finance Director Susan Thompson as acting city auditor, a statutory title required for special assessment certifications.
Thompson told commissioners she and staff reviewed job descriptions and assignments and that the change is intended to create efficiencies and align expertise. “The city auditor is actually a position that's required by Century Code,” Thompson said, explaining why the finance director would hold the auditor title for certification purposes.
The commission added a six‑month review to revisit job descriptions and responsibilities after the change goes into effect following the outgoing auditor’s retirement/medical leave. Commissioners debated whether combining the finance director and auditor titles is appropriate when leadership may change in six months; staff and state league representatives said similar structures exist elsewhere.
The motion passed by roll call.
