Montgomery County Recreation seeks prom attire donations; distribution set for April 4

Marcela Rodrguez Villagran, host of the Spanish-language program En Sintoneda, and Mnica Hammer, communications and community outreach manager for the Montgomery County Department of Recreation, urged residents to donate formalwear and accessories so students can attend their school proms at no cost.
Mnica Hammer said donations are being accepted now at the Marilyn J. Prazner Recreation Center through Saturday, Feb. 28, during normal center hours, and that a special collection event will be held Saturday, Feb. 21 at the Jamie Lawrence Recreation Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. "Estamos aceptando las donaciones ahora en el Centro de Recreacif3n Prazner todo este mes hasta el se1bado 28 de febrero," she said.
The department asks for new or gently used formalwear in good condition. Hammer said larger sizes are in particular demand. The program accepts dresses, suits, shoes, ties, jewelry and small handbags so students can assemble complete outfits.
Hammer said the distribution will take place Saturday, April 4 at the Marilyn J. Prazner Recreation Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Students do not need to register in advance but must bring school identification to select items. "Normalmente recibimos aproximadamente 100 estudiantes," Hammer said, and the department's goal is to collect several hundred items so attendees have multiple options.
Organizers ask donors to drop off items during center hours or at the Feb. 21 pop-up collection. For more information, residents can consult the Montgomery County Department of Recreation website or the program En Sintoneda for reminders ahead of the distribution.
The department framed the drive as a community effort to ensure students can attend a milestone event with dignity and celebration; further reminders will be issued on En Sintoneda as the April distribution approaches.
