Superintendent reports interim business administrator pick, playground grant application, iPad pilot and SSDS counts

Leonia’s superintendent updated the board on staffing, facilities and instructional pilots at the district’s recent meeting.
The superintendent said the district is seeking county superintendent approval to appoint a retired Bergen County business administrator as interim business administrator and board secretary, with an expected start on or about March 1 pending approvals. The district also applied for a local recreational improvement grant to fund playground improvements at ACS, including construction of a retaining wall to address flooding and purchase of new equipment.
On instructional technology, the superintendent said the district launched a pilot at the middle school using iPads for roughly 15 students to compare learning on iPads with Chromebooks; cases and keyboards were provided and the district plans to extend the pilot to the high school if results are positive. The superintendent also reported the district is transitioning its staff health benefits plan and that school-based meetings with benefits brokers are scheduled to address staff questions.
On student safety reporting, the superintendent cited the Student Safety Data System (SSDS) submission for Sept. 1–Dec. 31: 14 incidents total this period (4 at the high school, 9 at the middle school and 1 at the elementary), down from 16 at the same point the previous year. The superintendent framed those counts as part of regular reporting to the state and closed the update by reminding the board that legal public notices will be posted digitally on the district website beginning March 1 under a public-notice publication reform.
