"I get to spend a lot of time with my absolute favorite age," said Mister Woodcock, who asked presenters about public perceptions of preschool educators and praised the depth of work behind the activities. Board members and staff emphasized that the lab is more than childcare and described it as a learning environment that teaches patience, language development and other transferable skills.
School leaders said the education committee previously received the report and recommended full-board attention. Dr. Harvey and Miss Schmaltz summarized committee follow-up items including a proposed district calendar and upcoming textbook review; presenters noted the preschool graduation is scheduled for May 7 and that the district's enrollment lottery for the 2027 school year accepts registrations through March.
Board members also discussed widening outreach so the district hears students who are less satisfied with school in addition to those who report positive experiences. One board member urged more deliberate solicitation of diverse student perspectives, saying the district should avoid token representation and seek candid feedback from students for whom school "is not working." Student representatives described the student voice committee's work to connect peers across social groups.
The board did not take formal action on the early learning lab presentation but moved several committee recommendations (calendar items, textbook adoption referrals and policy readings) to upcoming legislative agendas. The meeting adjourned after routine business and an announcement that the board would convene an executive session to discuss legal matters.
