City outlines 152 community events for 2026, plans expanded July 4 celebration

Mister Budge told the council his team identified 152 recurring events in the city calendar for 2026, including 21 that the city runs. He highlighted Coffee with the Mayor (monthly), 11 Farmers Markets beginning June 4, six annual blood drives and a range of other community programs.
On July 4, Budge described a three-day slate: a concert and movie in the park on July 3, expanded Central Park festivities and a full parade on July 4 (with a kids’ bike parade to kick it off), and a family day at West Park on July 5. He said the city is collaborating with the VFW, the American Legion and the Chamber of Commerce.
Council members discussed fireworks planning and costs. One councilmember said the fireworks vendor raised prices; a figure of $55,000 for the fireworks vendor was stated in the record, and a drone show was discussed with an estimated cost of about $250,000. Staff said they are accepting donations to help fund event costs and will coordinate with Kern County Fire on safety and disposal of seized illegal fireworks.
Council members and staff emphasized interagency coordination for safety, traffic control and post-event debriefs. The city said it will provide additional event details and outreach as the season approaches.
