Brea Olinda USD highlights summer modernization work and rising modernization eligibility
Summary
District facilities leaders reported summer projects are largely on schedule — including completed parking and culinary classroom work, four playground upgrades near completion — and said updated modernization eligibility rose by about $5 million after a new state bill.
District staff gave a summer facilities update at the July 17 board meeting, reporting numerous modernization and deferred-maintenance projects are underway or complete and that an updated district-wide modernization eligibility estimate increased by roughly $5 million.
Assistant Superintendent of Business Rick Champion and Director of Maintenance Operations Jeff Ferrauto led the report, describing projects that are ahead of schedule and items that will be completed before the start of the school year. Champion said Mariposa’s modernization is finished and classroom furniture deliveries are starting; the Falcon Lot parking upgrade — a DSA project — is complete and awaiting asphalt curing and re-striping. He also noted four playground projects (Alainda, Country Hills, Mariposa and Falcon) were approximately 90% complete.
Champion pointed to one small change order tied to correcting prior work and thanked contractors and in-house MOT staff for fast turnarounds. He said the district had its firm update modernization eligibility after a July 3 state bill and that “district wide... eligibility district wide went up $5,000,000,” meaning the district’s potential matchable modernization eligibility increased by that amount.
Other highlights included completion of a new culinary arts classroom with stainless steel equipment and an updated timeline for ongoing fencing mobilization meetings; staff said they will report back with an August facilities presentation.
Trustees and board members praised the facilities team’s speed and the predominately local contracting model. "This is doesn't happen in construction, like, this fast ever," one trustee said, praising staff and contractors for finishing work quickly and effectively.
The facilities division will provide a fuller update in August, and staff asked trustees to contact them for site walks and follow-up questions.
