Brea Olinda USD board unanimously approves Franklin Covey contract, calendar change and multiple MOUs

Trustees approved a 2024–25 agreement with Franklin Covey for districtwide coaching implementation, a superintendent’s recommendation described as districtwide professional development. The board also approved a 2024–25 memorandum of understanding that adjusts the bargaining‑unit work‑year calendar: the January staff development day that was typically held the last Friday of the month will be moved to Nov. 1 to avoid historically low student attendance the day after Halloween.
Other items approved by voice vote, 5–0, included a memorandum of understanding to provide an advisor for a robotics summer enrichment camp; a 2024–25 MOU for girls flag football; a 2024–25 agreement with Lakeshore for transitional kindergarten furniture; and a 2024–25 agreement for food services/individual food service vendor for purchase of paper products.
Superintendent Leon explained the calendar change was driven by attendance patterns: “We noticed a significant decline in student attendance the day after Halloween. So we are moving the staff development day to November 1,” he said.
Board members recorded routine approvals of the minutes and the consent calendar earlier in the meeting; all were approved by voice vote, 5–0. The superintendent also highlighted upcoming events and dates, including the district’s first day of instruction on Aug. 15, a staff‑development rally on Aug. 13 and a district fencing groundbreaking at Laurel on Aug. 20.
None of the items on the agenda generated extended debate at the meeting; board members generally voted by voice and the record shows unanimous approval for the listed contracts and MOUs.
