At its Oct. 10 meeting, the Cypress School District Board of Trustees voted to ratify a partnership MOU, approve multiple facilities contracts and ratify a three-year employment contract extension for the assistant superintendent of business services.
Votes at a glance
- Ratified memorandum of understanding with TGR Learning Lab Anaheim, for fifth- and sixth-grade participation (09/01/2024–05/30/2025), not to exceed $6,000; motion moved and seconded and ratified by board vote.
- Approved contracting with MP South Inc. for the 2024 districtwide LED lighting retrofit (tentative 10/21/2024–02/24/2025) at a total cost of $511,970.80. Trustees asked for a school-by-school breakdown of costs and discussed lamp color options (3,000–5,000K) and a pilot installation at one school before districtwide rollout. The meeting record indicates the motion was moved by Trustee Hayashida and seconded by Trustee Saundy.
- Approved contracting with MP South Inc. for the Arnold transitional-kindergarten restroom addition (tentative 10/21/2024–12/31/2024) at a total cost of $142,827.08; trustees discussed TK facility needs and the requirement to submit restroom additions to the Division of State Architect.
- Approved contracting with Chapman Coast Roof Company Inc. for the 2024 Vessels building roofing replacement (tentative 12/21/2024–01/31/2025) at a total cost of $293,809.00.
- Ratified a three-year contract extension for the district’s assistant superintendent of business services, extending employment through 06/30/2027; the board provided the oral summary required by California Government Code section 54953(c) and noted no change to compensation.
What trustees asked and what the district said
Trustees sought greater detail on the LED contract allocation by site and queried whether LED fixtures would be too bright; district staff said the work replaces lamps (not full fixtures), that lamp color options typically range from 3,000 to 5,000K and that the district plans to pilot at one site before expanding. On TK restrooms, staff said adding restrooms requires Division of State Architect review and that the district is reviewing counts and program needs before committing to additional projects.
Financial and implementation notes
The LED retrofit contract is the largest single capital dollar amount approved at the meeting ($511,970.80). The board approved the projects under existing maintenance-construction unit-price bid agreements and set tentative implementation windows for late 2024–early 2025. The MOU with TGR covers student participation in an external program at a modest not-to-exceed amount.
Next steps
Staff will provide requested breakdowns for the LED retrofit by location, begin site-based pilot work, and proceed with DSA filings as required for restroom additions. The contracts are authorized and will proceed per the tentative schedules announced at the meeting.
