Kossuth County raises well and septic permit fees; vote 3–0 with one abstention

The Kossuth County Board of Supervisors voted to raise permit fees for private wells and septic systems after hearing from inspection staff who said multiple site visits and travel time make the current $75 fee insufficient.

An environmental/inspections staff member described typical fieldwork that can require several trips — initial assessment, installation inspection, completion check and water sampling — and argued the fee should better reflect staff time and travel. “$75 has been for a long time,” the staff member said, noting that $25 of the well fee goes to the Department of Natural Resources so the county retains roughly $50 under the current structure.

Board members reviewed comparable fees in neighboring counties and discussed intermediate options. A supervisor proposed a compromise to set the well permit fee at $125 and the septic permit fee at $150. That motion was seconded and approved; the meeting record notes three ayes and one abstention.

The board instructed staff to implement the new fee schedule and to inform contractors and property owners; board members said the change would be communicated in advance so permit applicants would not be surprised.

Outcome: motion approved; tally recorded as three in favor, one abstention.
