A sponsor explained that when Albemarle County and the city agreed in 2019 to build the county district court in Charlottesville, the legislature did not settle which sheriff would provide security for the new facility. SB 713 grants the Albemarle County sheriff concurrent jurisdiction to provide security at the courthouse and on courthouse grounds; it does not change the sheriff’s responsibilities elsewhere in the city.
Sheriff Bryant, appearing remotely, told the committee the 2019 agreement left the security assignment unclear and said the legislation, prepared with Senator Dietz’s assistance, ensures the county sheriff will provide courthouse and courtroom security for district courts sitting in Charlottesville.
The committee moved, the clerk opened the roll, and the bill was reported unanimously.
