Committee advances $15,000 ARPA grant for Rip City Boxing program

The Education, Environment & Sustainability Committee voted Feb. 19 to advance resolution 20250005, which would award up to $15,000 from District 3 ARPA funds to the Old Brooklyn Community Development Corporation to support Rip City Boxing.
Hope Fierro, Old Brooklyn CDC's community engagement manager, and Hiram de Jesus spoke on behalf of Rip City Boxing and said the program provides classes and after-school training that aim to teach coping skills and discipline. De Jesus told the committee that coach Ray Ruiz has run the program for about a decade largely pro bono and that "he's gotten a total of 16 candidates to go into the fire academy and 8 into the Cleveland Police Academy" from program participants over the last 10 years.
Committee members thanked presenters and approved a motion to pass the resolution out of committee for second reading. The item will return to full council for subsequent readings and a final appropriation vote.
