Cuyahoga County Council on March 11 approved a contract amendment to expand hazardous-material abatement and add demolition work at the old juvenile court complex, authorizing up to $6,810,362 to Cold Harbor Building Company under the Ohio Brownfield Remediation Program.
A sponsor said certain hazardous materials "could not be removed without actually making structural changes," and therefore abatement will happen in parallel with demolition. The sponsor said demolition could start in late 2025, with more visible work for the surrounding community in 2026. "Some things will be saved," the sponsor added, specifically citing tiles and a sculpture on East 22nd that would be preserved.
Councilwoman Simon said she was "thrilled to see this finally happening" and urged continued community involvement in planning what follows demolition. The resolution was moved, seconded, and adopted by voice vote.
Next steps: the sponsor indicated demolition work and abatement will proceed per the Ohio Brownfield Remediation Program timeline; the county will oversee contract execution and preservation of identified artifacts.
