Magna adopted Ordinance 2025-O-23 to bring local building regulations into compliance with House Bill 48’s Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) requirements. Paul Ashton, the city’s legal counsel, introduced the item and said the adoption is a legislative requirement; Unified Fire Authority Fire Marshal Wade Watkins urged timely adoption and emphasized the need for a clear WUI map.
"The code adoption is very important, and having that adopted is gonna be very, in line with House Bill 48," Watkins said, recommending the city adopt the code now and receive the official map from MSD and state partners at a later date.
Staff explained the WUI map is under development and will be presented to planning commission in January and brought to council for formal adoption thereafter. Council moved, seconded and approved the ordinance by voice vote to meet the statutory timeline; the transcript records the motion and voice vote but not a roll-call tally.
The adoption brings local code into alignment with state-mandated wildfire-safety standards; staff signaled they will continue work with Forestry, Fire and State Lands and the Unified Fire Authority to confirm map clarity and citizen-facing materials.
