Plainfield council sworn in; Steve Hockaday chosen council president, Darcella Sessoms elected vice president

At a Jan. reorganization meeting, Plainfield swore in newly elected council members, unanimously elected Steve Hockaday as council president and Dr. Darcella Sessoms as vice president, and outlined new leadership priorities for 2025.
Plainfield held its 2025 reorganization meeting where newly elected officials were sworn in and council officers elected.
Steve G. Hockaday was officially certified by the Union County canvassers and administered the oath of office as councilman at-large by Union County Superior Court Judge Dara Govan. The council then opened nominations for council president; after nominations and a roll-call vote, Hockaday was elected council president and again sworn in to the office. In remarks after his oath, Council President Steve Hockaday said it was "both an honor and a privilege" to serve and outlined priorities including civility in government, transparency, affordability and protections for marginalized residents.
The council also certified Charles McCray as councilman for the Third Ward; Reverend Reginald McCray administered his oath. Later, Dr. Darcella Sessoms was nominated, unanimously elected and sworn in as the 2025 council vice president; Assemblywoman Linda S. Carter administered the vice-presidential oath.
The council performed a full roll call that confirmed a quorum and completed the officer elections without contested results following the votes recorded in the meeting.
