Because the vacancy occurred more than 130 days before the next general municipal election, an appointed individual would serve only until the results of the next general election; the unexpired portion of the term would then appear on the November ballot for the remaining two years.
Council members signaled general support for appointment rather than waiting until November; a motion to publish the notice and begin the appointment process carried 3-0.
Next steps: staff will publish the notice of intention to fill the vacancy, accept applications per the city's timeline and return to council with recommended candidates or a process timeline.
