District staff presented the state of wellness spaces across Orange Unified and proposed next steps for expanding and standardizing the program.
Executive Director Eddie Angel and coordinators described wellness spaces as non‑medical calming rooms where students can de‑escalate, check in with counselors and learn emotional regulation skills. Staff cited national trends in youth mental health and said spaces operate as tier‑1 prevention supports. Presenters outlined next steps: develop districtwide guidelines, staffing models, training protocols, consistent furnishings, impact assessment systems and expanded community partnerships and grant searches to support funding.
Board members and public commenters emphasized three themes: (1) consistent staffing and coverage so a space is available when a student is sent there, (2) training for all campus employees — including classified staff and bus drivers — so staff can identify and refer students, and (3) rigorous data collection to measure impact and enable grant funding. Presenters said medical services are not provided in wellness rooms and that the district will work with partner agencies and the county to design common data practices and return with recommendations.
