Student rep, superintendent highlight new gym, college-prep events and fall arts

Brynn Schmidt, the new student representative from Los Alamitos High School, delivered her first board report at the Aug. 26 meeting, thanking ASB peers and school staff and highlighting five areas: academics, activities, athletics, arts and a student spotlight.

"My name is Brynn Schmidt, and I'm honored to serve as your new student representative to the board of education from Los Alamitos High School," Schmidt said in her remarks. She described back-to-school activities including ASB outreach, a freshman Sweet Start social to help incoming students connect, and multiple upcoming arts performances.

Schmidt also highlighted early athletic successes: the Griffins opened the season with a 20—12 win over Inglewood and a 34—131 victory at Kapolei, citing contributions by Beckham Hoffman and Lenny Ibarra and naming head coach Ray Fenton.

Superintendent Dr. Pulver closed the student segment and used his superintendent's report to highlight facilities and college-preparation supports. He invited the community to a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a community open house for the district's new 36,000-square-foot competition gymnasium, noting "this building was erected, through Measure K and Measure G funds." Dr. Pulver also previewed a Senior College Summit on Sept. 8 and a series of workshops for UC and CSU applications offered in partnership with the district's college and career center and LAFE, the district education foundation.

The board recessed briefly for photos with ASB and later returned to routine business.
