Newport‑Mesa board swears in trustees, names officers and committee rosters

Trustees of the Newport‑Mesa Unified School District were sworn in and the board completed its annual organizational business at a Nov. 19 meeting that included officer appointments, committee assignments and a closed‑session readout.

The board convened its open session at 6:04 p.m. and announced that in closed session it had approved a resignation agreement and general release by roll call (5 ayes, 1 absent). The board then administered the oath of office to newly seated and returning trustees.

At the organizational portion of the meeting the board unanimously appointed Doctor Smith as board secretary for 2025 and approved an assistant secretary nomination and a slate of management‑level personnel designations. “Doctor Smith is appointed as our board secretary,” the chair said after the roll‑call vote carried 6‑0.

Trustee Murphy nominated Leona Olson to serve as the district’s chief negotiator for 2025; the appointment was approved by a 6‑0 vote. (The transcript includes an instance later that spells the name as “Leon Olson”; the first written nomination in the meeting record used “Leona Olson.”)

The board grouped a long list of routine committee appointments into a single motion and approved them unanimously. The chair said the policy edit team must be limited to three trustees under board policy; the board approved Trustee Anderson, Trustee Pierson and Trustee Arcelo for that committee.

Consent calendar items passed by roll call (6‑0). Trustees also recognized a pilot memorandum of understanding to deliver water‑safety instruction at Whittier School in partnership with the City of Costa Mesa, the YMCA and the Ben Carlson Foundation.

The board adjourned the organizational meeting at 6:26 p.m. and resumed regular business after a short recess.
