District details summer facilities work: LED lighting, playgrounds, ADA fixes and culinary upgrades
Summary
District facilities staff reported LED lighting upgrades, exterior painting and front-office reconfigurations this summer, multiple playground installations underway, ADA slope corrections and completion work on a culinary arts classroom; bids for a larger project will return to the board on June 27.
District maintenance and operations staff updated the board on summer facilities projects, describing ongoing modernization across elementary and secondary campuses as crews prepare for the fall.
Rick Champion and Jeff Ferrato outlined recent work: LED classroom lighting upgrades began in May at Mariposa; Country Hills underwent exterior painting and lighting replacement; Falcon and Air Vista are being reconfigured to provide single points of entry and correct ADA routing; and four playground projects are in progress with Alinda complete and Mariposa about halfway finished.
"We replaced all the old fluorescent lighting with LED lighting," Champion said, noting the district phased the work over weekends to limit disruption. Ferrato described ADA-compliant changes in the culinary arts workspace and other site-specific improvements, including shallower sinks and accessible workstations added to the program area.
Champion said the district received three sealed bids on schedule for an upcoming project and will present a contract recommendation at the June 27 meeting. He also noted effort to align grant dollars (including AB1290 RDA facility transfers) and fund 40 capital balances with projected modernization work.
Trustees thanked facilities staff for rapid turnaround on painting and upgrades and asked that before/after photos and project details be shared with the community to highlight the investments. Staff offered to provide summer walkthroughs for trustees and community members by appointment.
Next steps: staff will return recommended contracts and change orders to the board on June 27 and continue summer installations to be ready for school start.
