The commission approved funding Feb. 19 to support two proposed projects from the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology (NBMG): a comprehensive Nevada mineral statistics compilation (including digitization of historical Bureau of Mines ledgers) and a metallogenic/metallurgic map identifying deposit types and critical-mineral potential.
Simon Jowett (NBMG) asked the commission to support a mineral-statistics report and an associated digitization of historic ledgers (estimated at $45,000 and $30,000, respectively) and a metallogenic map (~$45,000). Commissioners emphasized the need for a project scope, schedule, milestones and a quarter-by-quarter spending plan. The motion to fund the mineral-statistics work (including ledger digitization) and the metallogenic map passed unanimously, with the division and NBMG directed to provide a detailed project plan for commission review at the next meeting.
Commissioners and staff said the projects would increase public data availability on past production, deposit types and critical-mineral potential, and would be published on the Division’s open-data site to support exploration and investment decisions in Nevada.
