DeKalb County commissioners approve minivan-use policy, assign maintenance to county staff

DeKalb County commissioners voted Feb. 17 to adopt a county minivan policy that assigns fueling and routine cleaning responsibilities to county maintenance staff and allows reimbursements for long trips with receipts. The measure passed on a 3–0 voice vote after commissioners added language specifying that “maintenance and fuel” would be maintenance’s responsibility.
Commissioners discussed practical details before the vote, including whether the policy should list vehicle VIN numbers and who would be responsible for ensuring the van was returned with sufficient fuel. County staff reported that Larry Lane, identified in the meeting as the maintenance director, had agreed to manage keys and take responsibility for fueling and cleaning. Commissioners also agreed that if an elected official or department head purchases fuel on a long trip, they must provide receipts for reimbursement.
The motion was made, seconded and adopted without public comment. Commissioners noted insurance would continue to be charged out of county general funds as before and that the policy will be updated if the county replaces the single vehicle currently covered.
