Board advances social studies curriculum to second reading after teacher presentations

Summary
A teacher committee recommended Gallopade and other social-studies resources after year-two pilots; trustees approved a first reading and materials will be available for public review before a March second reading.
Trustees voted to move the district’s proposed 2026 social studies curriculum to a second reading after teachers from elementary through high school described pilot results and recommended specific materials.
Teachers and department leaders summarized a three-year adoption process: Year 1 focused on vision and alignment, Year 2 carried out pilots and vendor presentations, and Year 3 will be full implementation with professional development. Steve Fox and other Edgewood teachers said Gallopade performed well in pilots and offered vertical alignment and digital tools; sixth-grade teachers highlighted accessibility features such as text-to-speech and language translations that helped multilingual learners.
The committee said different grade levels will use different formats—a workbook or printed consumable in some elementary grades and online resources in others—and asked the board for an open purchase order for consumables linked to project-based learning. Trustees were told the adoption came in under the budget line for curriculum and that hard copies and online samples will be available at central office for public inspection.
The board approved the first reading; the adoption will return for a second reading next month. Administration said approval at the second reading would authorize purchases and implementation planning.
Representative quote from a teacher: "As soon as I saw it, this was like a dream for me," said an Edgewood committee teacher describing a preferred resource.
