City to replace three aging diesel garbage trucks with $725,000 DEP Volkswagen grant

City managers told commissioners on Feb. 18 that the city had been awarded up to $725,000 from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Volkswagen Diesel Emissions Mitigation Program to replace three aging diesel sanitation trucks.
Deputy City Manager Jumminville and fleet staff described program eligibility — vehicles must be model year 2009 or older and must meet specific disposal and usage documentation requirements for audit purposes — and explained the award requires no local match. Reginald DeFwany (Community Beautification and Waste Management) and fleet staff worked with the grants team to assemble the application and supporting vehicle usage data. The city’s motion to accept the award passed unanimously 5‑0.
What’s next: Fleet managers will take steps to retire eligible units per DEP requirements and proceed with procurement of replacements. City budget staff noted that the city has obtained over $352 million in grants in the last five years across departments, underscoring a continued emphasis on outside funding for capital needs.
