Members of the council’s Youth Solutions group told the Youth Leadership Advisory Council that they are moving from planning toward execution for student safety outreach, including school assemblies focused on e-bike and e-scooter safety, printed materials and community events.
The students said they are drafting flyers, posters and pamphlets with a stated goal of having drafts ready by next week and are identifying community events where they can promote materials and host a table. "We're planning a table and promoting materials once they are finalized," one student said, describing outreach to community centers and city-hosted events. The group reported emailing Palo Verde High School and Hyde Park Middle School and awaiting responses as they work to finalize one or two schools for assemblies.
Dr. Tammy Malich said the Youth Solutions group will meet after the council with Erin Breen, director of PedSafe Vegas — a UNLV-partnered safety effort — and that some group members will join the mayor's student safety panel on Feb. 26. Malich also said the group's documentary project was selected for additional grant consideration and potential entry in a student film festival.
Youth Solutions members asked for connections to schools and community partners; Harry Williams, neighborhood outreach specialist, suggested the March 12 Ward 5 Kids Safety Fair in Las Vegas as an outreach opportunity and provided a contact (David McGowan at Clark County) and a phone number for vendor sign-up. Alex Fuller, a local scouting council finance officer who offered public comment, also volunteered to help facilitate a future scouting partnership for outreach activities.
Next steps for the Youth Solutions group include finalizing materials, confirming school assembly dates with district partners, coordinating with L V M P D and the commissioner's office for panel participation, and following up on grant and documentary opportunities.
