Youth Leadership Advisory Council establishes community engagement and social media subcommittees

The Youth Leadership Advisory Council on Monday voted to form two subcommittees to expand outreach and digital engagement: a community engagement subcommittee and a social media subcommittee. The council approved motions to formally establish both bodies and recorded the members who expressed interest.
Council Chair Nguyen opened the discussion to define scopes and membership, noting the November bylaws amendment allowed subcommittees. Member Cohen proposed a social media subcommittee “to publicize what WILAC does,” connect with youth organizations in the Las Vegas community and “spread awareness on important issues,” and also recommended a community engagement subcommittee to run events such as school supply and food drives. Member Cohen moved to establish the community engagement subcommittee; Member Manales seconded and the motion carried. Member McAllen moved to form the social media subcommittee; Member Sy seconded and the motion carried.
Dr. Tammy Malich, the city’s Director of Youth Development and Social Initiatives, told the council the city social media team is willing to create official YLAC accounts but “they are comfortable with creating those accounts, but the suggestion we made last month was that you guys have a key person who is over that responsibility, who would have access to that account.” Malich recommended naming a lead who would hold credentials while a broader team could contribute content.
Clerk staff recorded members who said they wanted to serve on each subcommittee. Members were reminded that per the bylaws subcommittee membership must remain below a quorum of the full council so the smaller body cannot effectively act as the full council outside a public meeting.
The council directed the new subcommittees to meet and prepare recommendations for the full council. The social media group will return with a proposed content manager and an approach for coordinating posts; the community engagement subcommittee will work on event plans and suggested leads to present at the next meeting.
