Trustee describes fear in community after recent ICE raids, calls for district outreach and resources

A Garden Grove Unified trustee used the board-discussion period to describe what he said were recent ICE raids in the district and to press the district to provide supports for families living in fear.

The trustee said one recent scene on Euclid and Westminster showed "what appeared to be an elderly man thrown to the ground" and that those events are terrorizing families: "This is not what justice looks like. This is not what safety feels like," he said. He described parents who are afraid to shop for groceries and students who are reluctant to attend summer activities because they fear losing parents to enforcement actions.

The trustee urged the board and district leadership to double down on connecting families with resources and legal assistance and said he would hold district leaders accountable for proactive responses. "We see you, we stand with you," he told families he said were affected.

Trustee Bridal and Vice President Houghton echoed concern and reported conversations with families who are struggling. Bridal emphasized two urgent needs—food security and mental-health support—and proposed creative outreach such as virtual meetings to reassure parents and give guidance on talking to children.

Board members said they appreciated staff efforts to marshal resources and indicated they would continue outreach during summer programs. No formal board directive, vote or new policy was adopted during the remarks; discussion focused on reaffirming support and identifying immediate needs for families and students.
