Council approves 'Heart' blade sign on Washington Street with border and thickness conditions

The HTC Sign Advisory Council approved a storefront blade sign for Heart at 25B Washington Street on the condition the applicant add a perimeter frame or hairline border and increase the sign thickness to prevent bowing.
Representatives from the sign contractor and the tenant explained they had reduced the sign from an initial 40 by 26 inches to 40 by 18 to meet the council's size limit. "We're happy to do [the border] as a concession," said Curry Hagerty, co-owner and CEO for the tenant, explaining the company's brand standards but indicating flexibility so the project would not be delayed.
Commissioners emphasized material durability and traditional local appearances. Kevin Koester and Ben Norman said a three-quarter-inch painted mahogany sign would be prone to bowing and recommended increasing thickness to about 1 to 1.25 inches and adding an edge band or thin white frame consistent with the sign guidelines. Staff asked the contractor to resubmit the revised artwork for the file; the applicant agreed to redesign the border and email the update the same day.
The board's approval specified a 40-by-18-inch dimension (5 square feet maximum) with increased thickness and frame; a staff re-submittal with the final border detail will accompany the item to the full board that evening for formal filing. The motion passed by recorded ayes and staff confirmed they would place the revised art in the meeting packet.
