A resident urged the San Gabriel City Council on Feb. 17 to place an emergency ordinance banning data centers on a future agenda, saying nearby cities have moved quickly to create moratoria as residents complain they were blindsided by proposed projects.
During public comment an unnamed speaker told the council the 45-day moratorium adopted by Montebello (referred to during remarks) expires on March 7 and that Monterey Park would discuss next steps on March 4. The speaker argued that ‘‘data centers don't belong anywhere in the San Gabriel Valley due to extreme drought, wildfire risk, air pollution, and an aged power grid.’’
The commenter said a ballot measure being considered in an adjacent city could preclude nearby residents from participating in a solution and urged San Gabriel officials to follow Montebello’s example by placing an emergency ordinance on a future agenda to prevent data-center construction. The speaker also said residents in the Valley have been organizing to oppose proposed data centers.
Council did not take action on the request tonight. No staff report or ordinance language was presented; staff did not announce a follow-up schedule during the meeting.
