A parent told the Springfield School District board that X’s generative-AI editing features have been used to create non-consensual altered images, and asked the district to pause posting images of minor students to the platform while legal protections and legislation catch up.
Carrie Doyle, a parent, told the Springfield School District board on Jan. 22 that she had asked the district to stop posting images of district children to X (formerly Twitter) after X added generative-AI editing that has enabled non-consensual altered images of minors.
Doyle said she emailed the board on Jan. 8 and asked for a conversation. "Why the district is actively choosing to continue posting images, given that capability that is built into the platform," she said, arguing the district should at least pause posting photos of minors while legislation and safeguards are developed.
The request focused on the risk that user-submitted prompts can produce sexualized or abusive images using existing photos on the platform. Doyle acknowledged she was not asking the district to leave social media entirely but said continuing to post photos to that particular platform was an active choice: "It's not choosing inaction. It is actively continuing." The board’s public record shows the comment was acknowledged but no formal policy change was advanced during the meeting.
The concern came during the public comment period and there was no immediate staff report or motion to change the district’s social-media practice recorded in the meeting minutes. The board did not debate the request on the floor that night, and no vote or directive to staff was announced.
The board’s next regular meeting is scheduled for Feb. 26; parents and community members who raised issues during public comment may pursue follow-up with the superintendent’s office or the board clerk ahead of that meeting.
