The Newport-Mesa board on Aug. 22 approved a districtwide security-camera contract with Everon LLC (FKA ADT) to install a unified surveillance and monitoring platform at school sites.
Facilities staff presented the award as part of a district priority to standardize surveillance, saying a unified Genetec/Bosch platform will allow cameras, access control and analytics to work together. “Using artificial intelligence to provide the act of monitoring, we can program events to action for certain events at the school sites,” a facilities presenter said, citing after-hours intruder alerts, license-plate recognition and firearm/gunshot detection as examples.
Trustee concerns and staff responses: Trustees pressed staff on false alarms (fireworks and noisy events), law-enforcement integration, video-storage retention and student privacy. Staff said gunshot detection is localized (radius-dependent) and that fireworks are likely outside that detection range but agreed to follow up with technical confirmation. Storage was described as industry-standard (about 30 days) with archival capability for incidents; staff said face-masking and tight access controls would be used to protect privacy and that live and archive access would be available to site administrators while exports would be centralized.
Implementation and oversight: The contractor will conduct site visits and verify camera placement; district servers and redundancy will be installed centrally; installation is to occur after hours and in phases with a contract completion date requested for Feb. 1. Staff said the system streamlines footage review using analytics and bookmarking and that district policy will govern camera access and footage sharing.
Vote: Trustee Weigand moved and Trustee Barto seconded the motion; a roll-call vote approved the contract.
What remains: Staff will return with specifics on false-alarm tuning, formal notification protocols for law enforcement and a finalized storage/retention policy tied to board policy.
