Anaheim Elementary, Altrusa and library honor 23 fourth‑grade writers; board recognizes trustee’s eight years of service

The Anaheim Elementary School District board on Nov. 13 honored 23 fourth‑grade students selected as district creative writing winners and later presented a recognition award to Trustee Doctor Jose Paulo McCalles for eight years of service.
Curriculum specialist Katie Hernandez introduced community partners and described the Creative Writing Project as a districtwide opportunity that began in 2014 in partnership with Altrusa International of Anaheim and the Anaheim Public Library. Carol Latham of Altrusa described the program’s growth to reach students across 23 district schools; she read a quote encouraging students to keep writing and reading. City librarian Audrey Luhan congratulated families and encouraged students to use library resources; staff noted that the winning essays are compiled into a zine available at public and school libraries.
Superintendent Jesus Jesse Chavarria and others presented a plaque honoring Trustee Doctor Jose Paulo McCalles, citing his work on arts education, dual‑language programming and culturally responsive curriculum efforts during eight years on the board. Former superintendent remarks highlighted McCallles’ community focus and leadership through pandemic years. McCallles offered farewell remarks and thanked the community and staff.
The honors portion of the meeting included student medal presentations and photographs; trustees recessed briefly and then returned to the business agenda.
