At the Anaheim Elementary School District’s Dec. 18 organizational meeting, Superintendent Jesse Chavarria administered the oath of office to reelected Trustee Jackie Philbeck and to newly elected Trustee Julie Yip.
After the ceremonial oath and public recognition, the board elected Trustee Juan G. Alvarez as president for 2025 and Trustee Jackie Philbeck as clerk, both by unanimous voice votes recorded as 5–0. Trustees also discussed and approved representatives and alternates to regional and county groups including the Orange County School Boards Association, the CSBA Legislative Network and the PTA council; that slate carried 5–0.
Julie Yip, sworn in during the public ceremony, addressed the board and community and said she was "proud to be the first Vietnamese American to sit on the board" and described herself as "an adult with autism," saying she hoped her service would inspire families and students who need support. A community speaker, Demi Garcia Menroy, praised Yip's advocacy for the special-needs community during public comment.
The board recessed briefly for a reception to allow recognition of newly elected and reelected trustees and reconvened to continue organizational business. The board’s next regular meeting was scheduled for Jan. 15, 2025.
