Nantucket commission endorses MassDOT's PM1 safety targets

The Nantucket Planning & Economic Development Commission on Feb. 17 voted to endorse the Massachusetts Department of Transportation's statewide PM1 safety performance targets for the 2022–2026 five‑year rolling averages.
Christina Mendoza of MassDOT briefed commissioners on PM1 rules and the agency's method for estimating 2025 and 2026 figures (using year‑to‑date counts, historical shares of annual totals and assumed annual percentage changes). MassDOT reported the 2022–2026 target for total fatalities as 357 (five‑year rolling average). For serious injuries the five‑year target was stated as 2,562. Mendoza said MassDOT's overarching goal remains zero deaths and that the targets use trend projections and an assumed 3% annual decrease in fatalities between 2025 and 2026 for projection purposes.
Commissioner Dave Iverson moved to accept the statewide targets; the motion passed by roll call.
The endorsement allows the region to formally adopt the statewide numeric goals or alternatively set its own regional targets by the federal deadline. Local staff said the targets will be used as a reference when the commission reviews regional transportation and safety programs.
